On Impersonal Desires

Generally speaking, when someone hears the word “impersonal” it evokes a sense of coldness or detachment. However, within the framework of the nondual understanding, impersonal signifies something quite different: selflessness. Here, impersonal thoughts and desires arise not on behalf of a personal agenda, but in service of harmony and unity.

Consider the desire to create beauty, to alleviate suffering, or to connect with another being on a deeper level. While these experiences are felt individually, their underlying impetus transcends the boundaries of a singular self. They are expressions of the inherent interconnectedness of all things, a natural outflowing of the love that is the very ground of being. Impersonal thoughts, words and actions are those that emerge from this deeper understanding. They may be acts of kindness, creativity, and compassion, and they arise effortlessly, naturally.

We often hear that thoughts create our reality, but reality is consciousness itself. Thoughts are simply temporary patterns of activity arising within this infinite, aware field. Thoughts do shape our experience of reality, however, coloring our perceptions and interpretations, but they are not the fundamental ground from which reality springs. Impersonal desires are not the cause of a more unified reality but rather are expressions of the underlying unity seeking to manifest itself more fully.

Our deepest yearnings, then, when stripped of the ego's perceived ownership, reveal themselves as movements of unified consciousness to experience itself in its fullness through connection, creation, and love.
